Boulevards and Byways is a travel blog focusing on Puerto Rico and the Caribbean providing the unique information about what to do, places to eat, and where to go – inspiring the traveler in all of us.

As a travel writer, blogger and marketer, it’s my ambition to inspire others to travel.

How it Started:

My dad and I at our cousin’s farm in Syracuse, New York.

My interest in travel started with my dad taking me on family car rides to petting zoos, state fairs, historic landmarks and our cousin’s farm in upstate New York.  We never traveled any further than a day’s ride away, and oftentimes he didn’t take the main highways but journeyed on side roads and byways instead –  the road less traveled. Never the less, it was always a new and exciting adventure – me in the back seat following along with a paper map, or my faced pressed against the window.  A quick stop at local roadside eateries always resulted in the tastiest food.

Where I’ve Been

The beautiful architecture of Paris

As I became older, my trips took me further away: Mexico City, Guadalajara, Paris, Toulouse, Madrid, Barcelona, Cork, and Kerry. They consisted of whirlwind itineraries, lengthy timetables, and always a side trip to something “off the beaten path.”  I’d immerse myself in learning about and visiting almost every major attraction in each city I visited.  I would take away a deep appreciation and respect of the culture, history, and food which uniquely defined the people of each particular area.  It was exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.

Warm Weather Called to Me

Did you know Old San Juan in Puerto Rico has gorgeous architecture also? Look at those colors! Read my blog post to find out why the cobblestones are blue.

Over the last few years, I’ve had the opportunity to travel to several Caribbean islands as well as Central America.  While it might be 20 degrees in my hometown of New York, – it’s “80 degrees somewhere,” and that has become my mantra – and my reason to visit warm weather locations.  Costa Rica, Bermuda, Bahamas, Roatan, Belize, St. Maarten, St. Thomas, St. John, and the British West Indies filled my weeks.  I replaced my hefty itineraries with simple lists of things to do and see.

My Blog

I decided to focus this blog site, Boulevards & Byways, on my journeys through my favorite Caribbean island, Puerto Rico. It’s a place where both Boulevards (main roads) and Byways (back roads) have steered me towards 15th-century history, hiking trails through caves, salsa dancing in the streets, and mouthwatering lechon in the central hills of the island. I keep going back for more as every road leads to something new.

It doesn’t matter whether you go to a petting zoo or Paris.  What matters too is taking that risk, the “road less traveled.”  It often leads to the biggest rewards. Perhaps my stories will inspire you to go “off the beaten path” and embark on your own travel adventure.  Puerto Rico is a great first place to start.
